Last week, Georgetown University student Sandra Fluke had been attacked with slurs and degenerative language by Rush Limbaugh over his radio talk show. These insults and comments would go on for a significant amount of time, calling her and fellow students names such as “slut” and “whore”, because they have believed she has so much sex that she cannot afford birth control coverage. The question we must ask is where did all of this come from?
This started February 23rd, 2012, when she had given the testimony originally intended for the prior week’s hearing panel to discuss if contraception (namely, birth control medication) should be forcibly covered by insurance, for women who work for businesses that have religious affiliations (hospitals, universities, etc). That hearing had taken placed on February 16th, 2012, and Sandra Fluke was the only witness the Democrats in the committee called, as well as the only FEMALE witness called on all sides, to make an argument supporting birth control coverage.
She had made arguments, as well as a personal anecdote story, that would argue to keep the requirement in place. What followed was that Rush Limbaugh took the opportunity to attack her. As a result, several petitions went up to ask Rush’s advertisers to pull their support from his radio show as a sign of protest to the hateful messages he was spreading about Ms. Fluke and fellow students at Georgetown.
So, what happened? Rush seems to have TRIED to apologize, and Sandra didn’t take it. MSNBC’s Ed Schultz (The Ed Show) covered this pretty well.
